Welcome to J.B. Custom Leather
I am Jim Brainard.
In 1970 I began my career hand tooling leather belts and wallets. By 1974 I was also making chaps, and rodeo gear when I was hired at my local boot repair shop, Hutch's Boot Shop. Hutch was a third generation boot maker under his father and his grandfather was of the owner of the Great West Saddlery, Alberta Canada. I apprenticed with Hutch for the next five years learning boot, shoe and saddle repair. In 1979 Hutch wanted to move on and so I purchased the shop from him. I started as "Cobbler's Hut" and changed my name to "Tanner's Leather Repair" in 1982. I continued my career as a repair technician and maker of all kinds of leather goods and upholstery work for the next 21 years in Parker, Colorado. I had grown to a very successful six man shop. I sold my shop in 2000 and opened a custom shop and repair facility in my home in Parker. In 2009 I returned to my mentor, Hutch, to learn boot making. He moved into my shop in 2013 to finish his bootmaking career until his passing in 2018. These days my passion and main focus is making custom western and english riding boots. I still have a great following of equestrian customers for saddle and tack repair. I also do other custom goods but a limited amount, by choice. I have trained and employ a proficiant repair technician to help with the saddle and tack repair work brought to me.
